Programme Note

Feed the Monster reimagines the piano as a living acoustic organism: not a conventional keyboard instrument, but an active system that absorbs, transforms and redistributes sound through its own physical resonance.

Five spatialised musicians project sound toward the piano, while the pianist controls an active vibration system that continually changes the instrument’s responsiveness. Soundboard, strings and wooden body act as resonating chamber, acoustic filter and transformative membrane; composed structures and improvisational processes interact with the piano’s changing behaviour.

Architecture is integral to the work. Performer positions, trajectories of projected sound and visible movement reshape the listening experience, while vibration and controlled feedback turn the piano into a material through which sound can circulate, destabilise and re-emerge.
