String Quartet n°3 begins from a reflection on the performer as an extension of the instrument. Breath, voice, gesture and instrumental resonance belong to the same physical field, allowing human and instrumental actions to merge. The work follows a gradual trajectory from what precedes sound — silence, air and gesture — towards vibration, resonance and finally its disappearance.

Souffle is treated as a physical and acoustic material rather than as a simple instrumental effect. Bow noise, brushing, changing pressure and other modes of contact move between air, noise and pitch, while the bodies of the instruments act as resonators and filters. Elsewhere, the performers’ own breath physically stimulates the instruments, producing sympathetic vibrations and filtered voices. Natural harmonics, multiphonics, microtonal repetitions and the viola’s koto-like fingernail playing progressively open the quartet towards more fragile, crystalline and unstable fields of resonance.

These materials do not unfold as separate episodes but as transformations of the same underlying process. Melodic writing emerges from noise, instrumental gestures become vibration, and harmonic resonance gradually expands into continuous sound waves before dissolving again into air, breath and silence. The work therefore describes a cycle in which the end returns to the conditions of the beginning — disappearance becoming the possibility of renewal.
