Programme Note
Whispering Spaces II extends concerns first explored in the amplified piano trio Whispering Spaces into the more homogeneous body of the string quartet. Within this shared instrumental family, minute differences of pressure, contact point and articulation become highly perceptible, allowing peripheral sounds, friction and fragile resonances to enter the notated texture.
The quartet behaves as a close network of bodies rather than four independent voices. Gestures pass from one performer to another, are imitated, displaced or transformed, while sounds generated before and after the articulated note continually disturb the apparent unity of the ensemble. The musical field therefore extends beyond sustained pitch towards the physical conditions through which sound emerges, circulates and disappears.
