The ancient Greek term hólos (ὅλος) evokes the interdependence of parts within a whole. Hólo(s) takes this idea as a model for nine instruments whose individual breaths, frictions and resonances remain distinct while forming a larger sonic organism.

Air and breath—souffle—operate as both energy source and acoustic phenomenon. Granulation, friction and circulating air form hybrid masses in which instrumental sounds behave as flows and forces rather than fixed objects. Respiration shapes articulation and phrasing, while inhalation, exhalation, tension and release also inform the larger form.

The ensemble’s spatial configuration evolves throughout the work, creating changing resonant polarities. Individual voices and collective textures continually reshape one another, allowing breath to function simultaneously as fragile gesture and generative orchestral force.
