Composed in Paris in the summer of 2014, Interlude is dedicated to Ensemble Nymphéas. Across its compact span, two contrasting ideas alternate within a continuous form. Soft unison lines and tremolo create a mysterious opening from which a melodic thread gradually emerges and develops.

The two-viola instrumentation gives particular weight to the inner voices. The violas act almost as soloists, answering the two violins and cello while enriching the harmonic field through their warm timbre. Blended colour, counterpoint and resonance create a post-impressionistic dialogue across the ensemble.

Near the end, the music expands towards an almost post-Romantic melodic expressivity before receding once again into the mysterious atmosphere of the opening.
