Programme Note

Trois pièces pour contrebasse explores the instrument through three contrasting studies, moving from lyrical recitation to percussive gesture and finally to the unstable resonance of natural harmonics.

Recitativo pays tribute to Domenico Dragonetti through a lyrical monologue generated from the letters of his name. Ligne Fuyante shifts towards tapping, pizzicato, col legno and other percussive actions, allowing the musical line to dissolve and reappear through rhythm, interruption and gesture.

Raining Waves develops fluid patterns of natural harmonics through pizzicato and bariolage, producing microtonal resonances in which pitch and timbre progressively merge. Across the triptych, the double bass moves between expressive voice, percussive gesture and resonant body.
