Programme Note

String Quartet n°1 — Introduction et allegro, hommage à Ravel is a two-movement tribute to Maurice Ravel. A brief introduction establishes a suspended and finely balanced sound world before giving way to a more mobile and rhythmically defined allegro. Together, the two movements evoke a nostalgic dream inspired by the atmosphere and refinement of Ravel’s early music.

The allegro follows a broadly ABA design, with a contrasting central section conceived in the spirit of a trio. Its principal theme is composed and developed à la manière de Ravel, not through direct quotation but through an attention to melodic contour, transparency, articulation and harmonic colour. Across the work, interlocking lines and subtle changes of register and attack maintain the clarity and delicacy of the quartet texture.
