Programme Note

Concerto pour Piano et Ensemble places a soloist associated with virtuosity against an ensemble conceived as a flux of air, friction and white noise. Traditional and extended piano techniques are filtered through the wider Souffle orchestration system, continually altering the border between solo and collective sound.

Virtuosity is progressively displaced from brilliant action toward effort, resistance and breathlessness. The piano becomes at once protagonist, resonant body and source of noise; by the end, suffocation and residual resonance leave only traces of the energetic confrontation.
